July 31, (THEWILL) – English football authorities have announced a series of measures to tackle bad behaviour on the pitch, including harsher punishments for harassing referees.
The new ‘Participant Charter’ empowers referees to take tougher action against unacceptable behaviour, supported by stronger disciplinary action from the Football Association. Serious and repeat offenders can expect increased financial penalties, and managers may face punishment if they leave the technical area to confront match officials.
English Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Masters, said: “We want players, managers and fans to continue showing their passion, but these new measures have been introduced to ensure that the line is not crossed when it comes to on-field and technical area behaviour.”
Additionally, clubs will seek stronger sanctions against fans involved in football tragedy abuse, such as chanting about the Hillsborough or Munich disasters. FA Chief Executive, Mark Bullingham, stressed the need to reset behaviour on the pitch and from the sidelines while ensuring referees receive the respect and protection they deserve. Bullingham said: “Incidents such as dangerous conduct, discrimination, and chanting about football-related tragedies have no place in our game – and can lead to football bans and potential criminal action.”
These measures are set to be implemented for the upcoming English Premier League season starting on Friday, August 11.
