July 15, (THEWILL) — The body of former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 in a London hospital on Sunday, is being flown back to Nigeria for a simple Islamic burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
His remains were transported on Tuesday aboard a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft just before 8 am.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials were among those who accompanied Buhari’s remains.
In a social media post, Shettima reaffirmed Daura as Buhari’s final resting place and described his death as a “deep loss to the nation.”
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to honour the late President.
President Tinubu has also constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee for the State Funeral of the former President.
A statement signed on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director, Information and Public Relations at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the Committee, is tasked with the responsibility of planning and coordinating a befitting state burial for the late elder statesman.
Chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, other Members of the Committee include Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Minister of Defence, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Minister of Works, Minister of Interior, Minister of FCT, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, National Security Adviser, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Inspector General of Police, Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS) and Chief of Defence Staff.
The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will serve as the Secretariat to the Committee.
