November 17, (THEWILL) — A major showdown appears imminent within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as rival factions prepare to hold separate National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, on Monday insisted that the NEC meeting convened under his leadership would go ahead as scheduled. Turaki spoke shortly after submitting a formal petition at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, against the factional National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accusing him of actions capable of destabilising the party.
“The petition is necessary to protect the integrity of the party’s administrative processes and alert security agencies about ongoing attempts to disrupt lawful activities of the party leadership,” Turaki said.
Despite Turaki’s position, a faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has also scheduled its own Board of Trustees (BoT) and NEC meetings for the same day at Wadata Plaza.
The parallel scheduling sets the stage for a possible confrontation between the two factions, both claiming legitimacy and control of the party’s national organs.
Party insiders told THEWILL that frantic efforts were underway Monday evening to avert clashes, with some stakeholders urging security agencies to take preemptive measures to prevent violence at the headquarters.
The PDP crisis has deepened in recent months, with both factions accusing each other of illegitimacy, procedural breaches, and attempts to seize control ahead of the 2027 general elections.
On Saturday, the party expelled Wike, Anyanwu, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Bature, Mao Ohuabunwa, factional Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, George Turner, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah, and Dan Orbih over alleged anti-party activities.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police had not issued a public statement regarding Turaki’s petition or the security arrangements for Tuesday’s potentially volatile dual meetings.
