October 31, (THEWILL) – Severe floods in eastern Spain have prompted La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to request postponements of multiple matches scheduled in Valencia this weekend. The devastating weather event has resulted in 95 fatalities, marking it the region’s most severe flash flooding in decades.
The RFEF Competition Committee will determine on Thursday whether to suspend several fixtures, including the high-profile clash between Real Madrid and Valencia. Additional matches under review include Villarreal versus Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, alongside three second-division encounters. The federation had previously suspended six Copa del Rey matches involving top-flight teams due to official warnings against non-essential travel.
Major football clubs across Spain have offered support to affected communities. Valencia Football Club has transformed its stadium into a collection point for essential supplies, collaborating with Valencia Food Bank to assist those impacted by the floods. La Liga has announced that all matches in the upcoming two rounds will observe a minute’s silence to honour those affected.
The severe weather conditions have affected multiple sports, extending beyond football to impact motorsport activities. Formula E testing at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit faces significant disruption due to infrastructure damage, specifically a compromised main access road caused by nearby river flooding. The circuit is scheduled to host the MotoGP season finale in two weeks.
