April 01, (THEWILL) – Turkish football giants Fenerbahce will hold a crucial vote on Tuesday, to determine whether they will follow through on their threat to withdraw from the Super Lig. The decision comes after a series of violent incidents involving fans in the top-flight league this season.
In March, the Istanbul club announced they were considering leaving the Super Lig after their players were attacked by Trabzonspor supporters, who stormed the pitch following a 3-2 loss. The brawl between fans, security forces and Fenerbahce players, including Nigeria’s Bright Osayi-Samuel, highlighted the concerning issue of crowd trouble that has plagued Turkish football.
Tuesday’s Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting will see Fenerbahce’s members vote on a motion to withdraw the 19-time champions from the Super Lig. The outcome could have seismic repercussions for the competition and the future of one of Turkey’s most successful clubs.
Currently, second in the standings, just two points behind leaders Galatasaray after 30 games, Fenerbahce’s potential exit would be a major blow to the Super Lig. The team is scheduled to host Adana Demirspor on Wednesday, though that fixture could be in jeopardy pending the vote’s result.
