March 21, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has declared that no cultural practice can justify criminality as it ordered the arrest and prosecution of individuals implicated in alleged sexual violence during the Alue-Do Festival, popularly known as the “Festival of Fertility,” in Ozoro community, Delta State.
The government’s declaration followed widespread outrage triggered by a viral video circulating on social media on Thursday, which alleged incidents of sexual assault and harassment during the festival held in Ozoro Kingdom, Isoko North Local Government Area.
Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Danbazau, described the reported acts as disturbing, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law.
While commending the swift response of the Delta State Police Command, Sulaiman-Ibrahim called for “a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure that all persons implicated are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
“No cultural or traditional practice can justify or excuse sexual violence in any form,” she stated.
She stressed that sexual assault remains a serious criminal offence that must be thoroughly investigated, with perpetrators held fully accountable under the law.
She noted that existing legal frameworks, including the Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act), provide clear protections against such offences and must be strictly enforced.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the safety and dignity of women and girls, the minister disclosed plans to strengthen collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide immediate support for victims, including psychosocial care, medical attention, and legal assistance.
She further revealed that efforts would be intensified to engage traditional rulers and community stakeholders to address harmful cultural norms and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The ministry also urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served and to help prevent future occurrences.
