BEVERLY HILLS, May 10, (THEWILL) –Â The Federal Government has declared that its policy on the non-payment of tuition fees in federal universities in the country is still ongoing.
The Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwuka, said this while briefing state house correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday.
He said no federal university should charge tuition fees, according to Nigerian law but said students could pay other auxiliary fees but not in excess.
“We understand some universities now charge fees per course unit and we are going to make sure that we investigate that properly and make it stop,” Anwuka said.
“Various university councils and management should be able to fix what fees students should pay that is affordable and acceptable to the students.
“The federal government does not determine fees for private and state universities, they only take responsibility for fees paid in the federal universities.”
THEWILL spoke with students from various federal universities who indeed confirmed that they have been charged tuition among other fees to be paid.
However, when contacted, the univerities faid to respond to enquiries about tuition fees.
