November 21, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has transferred the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to a correctional facility in Sokoto State.
The move comes less than 24 hours after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on multiple terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Kanu’s former counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development in a post on his X handle on Friday, raising concerns that the transfer would severely hinder access to Kanu by his lawyers and family members.
“MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers,” he wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Department of State Services (DSS) nor the Ministry of Interior had issued an official statement regarding the relocation.
However, Kanu’s legal team, led by Nnaemeka Ejiofor, said in a live video seen by THEWILL that DSS operatives had informed them the transfer was carried out for “security reasons.”
The team spoke after visiting the DSS FCT Command in Abuja, where they were told that the IPOB leader had been moved and was “safe” at a correctional centre in Sokoto.
