November 06, (THEWILL) — FIFA introduced a new Peace Award on Wednesday, sparking immediate criticism from football supporters who labelled the initiative shameless and a complete farce.
The global governing body stated the prize would recognise individuals who unite people and bring hope for future generations. The first presentation is scheduled for December 5 in Washington DC during the final World Cup draw.
Fans quickly predicted US President Donald Trump would be the inaugural recipient, noting the timing follows his recent failure to secure the Nobel Peace Prize.
Many supporters claim the award was created specifically for Trump, given his close friendship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Social media responses ranged from calling it a total sham to comparisons with fictional awards.
Infantino previously called for Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize after a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, praising the president’s role in the Middle East peace process.
The FIFA president attended a Gaza peace summit in Egypt alongside Trump last month, further cementing their relationship. Infantino has consistently supported Israel throughout the conflict while involving himself in diplomatic efforts.
The bond between the two figures strengthened during the summer Club World Cup in the United States.
Trump made a surprise appearance at the final, receiving a medal from Infantino and claiming he would keep the original trophy in the Oval Office whilst Chelsea received a replica. The president praised FIFA’s work in growing football across America.
Earlier this year, Infantino faced anger from FIFA members who walked out of the organisation’s congress in Paraguay after he arrived hours late.
The delay occurred because he had prioritised travelling with Trump to Qatar and Saudi Arabia over the annual meeting. UEFA criticised the schedule change for accommodating what appeared to be private political interests.
