Fiorentina Sack Pioli After Winless Serie A Start

Stefano Piol

November 04, (THEWILL) — Stefano Pioli has been dismissed by Fiorentina following a winless run of 10 Serie A matches since his appointment last summer. The 60-year-old, who led AC Milan to the league title in 2021/2022, managed only four draws and six losses in domestic competition despite winning all four UEFA Conference League fixtures.

The decision came after a home defeat to Lecce at the weekend. Pioli had replaced Raffaele Palladino in the dugout at the start of the campaign, but poor league form proved decisive. Daniele Galloppa will serve in a caretaker capacity whilst the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A last term and reached the Conference League semi-finals. The club had been runners-up in the competition in back-to-back seasons, losing finals against West Ham United and Olympiacos. This marked Pioli’s second spell in charge, having previously overseen eighth- and 16th-place finishes between 2017 and 2019.

The summer transfer window brought significant reinforcements to the squad. Strikers Edin Dzeko, Roberto Piccoli and Albert Gudmundsson joined the club, along with full-backs Robin Gosens and Tariq Lamptey. Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli also arrived, adding to a roster that includes former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Italy international striker Moise Kean.

Fiorentina face Mainz away in the Conference League on Thursday before travelling to Genoa in Serie A three days later. The club will hope a change in management can reverse their domestic struggles whilst maintaining their European momentum.
