May 17, (THEWILL) – A promising group of Nigerian athletes has embarked on their journey towards stardom by securing academic and sports scholarships to various American universities.
These 22 athletes proudly represented the country at the recently concluded African Under-18 and Under-20 Athletics Championships in Ndola, Zambia. Against all odds, Team Nigeria emerged victorious with an impressive haul of 17 gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals, securing the second spot on the medals table, with South Africa leading based on numerical strength.
In celebration of their remarkable achievements at the championship, Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, treated the athletes to a dinner on Monday night. At the occasion, Secretary to the Delta State Government, Patrick Ukah, representing Governor Okowa, expressed his delight at witnessing the exceptional performance of Nigerian juniors at the championship.
He specifically praised the achievements of the Delta-born athletes and encouraged them to build upon their success. Ukah later announced various awards for the athletes, emphasising the state’s pride and excitement for their accomplishments.
An official, who accompanied the team to Ndola, revealed that approximately 22 of the athletes have received scholarships from different universities in the United States. Some of them have already obtained their visas and are set to depart for the United States in the near future.
