SAN FRANCISCO, May 14, (THEWILL) – A fugitive and member of the Boko Haram that Nigerian authorities declared wanted over the bombing of the Nyanya Bus Station just outside Abuja, Nigeria’s seat of power, has been taken into custody by the Interpol in Sudan.
Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, who is believed to be the mastermind of the bombing, was detained following an international red notice for his arrest issued by the Nigerian Police Force, a member of Interpol. The blast killed over 70 persons and left many injured. Authorities had earlier detained five other persons.
Ogwuche, an army deserter, who carries a British passport, used to work for the intelligence unit of the Nigerian Army before deserting in 2006.
The State Security Service (SSS) had announced a reward of N25 million for information leading to his arrest.
Ogwuche, an indigene of Benue State, was first arrested at the Abuja airport in 2011 on arrival from Britain on suspected terrorism-related activities but was released to the care of his father, a retired army colonel.
The Coordinator of the national briefing centre on security and Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri, confirmed his arrest during a press conference in Abuja Wednesday.
“Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche who was earlier declared wanted has been arrested in Sudan with the efforts of the Army, DSS, the National Bureau of the Interpol based at the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters and security operatives of Sudan.
“The efforts of the Interpol, Nigerian Police and the Department of State Security Service has led to his arrest,” Omeri said, adding that the suspect will be extradited to Nigeria for prosecution.
