January 21, (THEWILL) — A 1-1 draw against Galatasaray left Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on 13 points in eighth position ahead of Wednesday’s remaining fixtures and next week’s final group match. The result was a missed opportunity for the Spanish club to strengthen their UEFA Champions League qualification prospects.
Giovanni Simeone headed in from Matteo Ruggeri’s left-wing delivery to give the visitors an early advantage after Julián Álvarez had earlier struck the side-netting. Galatasaray levelled in the 20th minute when Marcos Llorente inexplicably turned Roland Sallai’s low delivery into his own goal despite facing no immediate threat inside the six-yard area.
The visitors controlled proceedings after the interval but could not break down goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır. Álvarez had a shot blocked inside the penalty area, whilst Giovanni Simeone’s dangerous delivery evaded Alexander Sørloth.
David Hancko came close when Abdülkerim Bardakcı cleared his effort off the line before the hour, and Antoine Griezmann’s late free-kick was pushed wide by Çakır.
The point means Diego Simeone’s team could have matched second-placed Real Madrid on points had they claimed all three. Instead, they must wait until the final round of group matches to confirm their qualification status.
