May 15, (THEWILL) – In response to COVID-19 cases that have recently impacted the Giro d’Italia, race director Mauro Vegni announced on Monday that spectators who come into contact with riders will now be mandated to wear masks.
The fresh outbreak of the virus has forced the race’s overall leader, Remco Evenepoel, to withdraw from the “Corsa Rosa”. The Belgian cyclist’s departure came shortly after he reclaimed the top spot in the race following the exclusion of Colombian Rigoberto Uran and Italian Filippo Ganna due to COVID-19.
Reflecting on the situation, Vegni admitted that there was a premature relaxation of precautions. In an interview recently, he emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant. Starting this week, the race organisers will reinstate certain restrictions, such as the compulsory use of masks in areas where spectators come into contact with the riders.
Vegni acknowledged that implementing these measures earlier might have been beneficial. It is worth noting that teams are not currently obligated to test their riders for COVID-19. Even if a positive case emerges, the team is not required to withdraw the affected rider from the competition.
With the recent developments, Britain’s Geraint Thomas will commence the 10th stage of the Giro d’Italia as the new race leader, benefitting from the COVID-19-enforced withdrawals of the last three leaders.
