March 14, (THEWILL) — Gordon delivered a pointed response to his recent critics, scoring the only goal as Newcastle United beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The England international had faced scrutiny after illness kept him on the bench during Newcastle’s UEFA Champions League draw with Barcelona in midweek. He answered in the 18th minute, finishing after Tino Livramento cut through Chelsea’s defence and fed Joe Willock, who squared for Gordon to convert.
Newcastle also felt aggrieved when Malick Thiaw went to ground under pressure from Reece James at a corner, with no penalty given. James, who had signed a new contract only the day before, later struck the base of the post with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick.
Liam Rosenior introduced Liam Delap for Malo Gusto at half-time in search of a response. The substitute wasted a glaring chance with 15 minutes left, while penalty appeals from Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella were both waved away.
Chelsea now risk dropping to sixth in the Premier League table if results on Sunday go against them, leaving their Champions League qualification hopes in serious doubt.
