July 31, (THEWILL) — Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue State Council, have praised the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for the steps taken in alleviating the suffering of the Internally Displaced Persons in the state.
Governor Alia, who made the acknowledgement when he played host to Senator Oluremi Tinubu at Government House, Makurdi, on a condolence visit arising from killings in Yelwata community, said the donation of one billion Naira for IDPs will be used judiciously and for the purpose it was meant.
He, therefore, appealed to the First Lady to consider championing the process of encouraging the domestication of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, especially across all North Central states of the Federation.
The Governor emphasised that a regional approach to ranching and the prohibition of open grazing will ensure consistency in enforcement and eliminate safe havens for violators moving across state boundaries, adding that her presence at a time when Benue people are yet again grieving over the recurring, senseless killings speaks volumes of her motherly heart, compassion and commitment to national solidarity.
According to the governor, through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi has carried all the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, noting that in Benue, the impact has been profound and far-reaching.
In a related development, the Nigeria Union of Journalists Benue State Council, after a congress presided over by its Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, appreciated the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her visit and donation of N1 billion for the Internally Displaced Persons in Benue State.
In a communique issued after the meeting, the union also acknowledged the interest shown by the president and her wife to aid the return of the IDPs to their ancestral homes.
The Congress, which was attended by the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Hon Solomon Iorpev, Rt. Hon Bem Mngutyo and Elder Terzungwe Uwua, also passed a vote of confidence on Chief Iorpev for his commitment to the unity and progress of the NUJ and for putting in efforts to excel in the duties assigned to him by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The communique, issued by its drafting chairman, Comrade Tamemor Kwaghzer, Joy Odeh, and Secretary, Paul Ikyugun, advised journalists to remain steadfastly professional in their reportage aimed at energising the practice of journalism.
