November 25, (THEWILL) – Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has emphasised that the revival of the Governor’s Cup Competition is aimed at stimulating the local economy and unearthing football talent across the state to support clubs like Lobi Stars FC and the national team.
The governor made this known on Sunday at the opening ceremony of the 2024 edition of the tournament, held at the J.S. Tarka Stadium in Gboko Local Government Area. Represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Youth, and Creativity, Rt. Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, the governor expressed optimism about the future of sports development in Benue State.
“The revival of school sports and grassroots competitions like the Governor’s Cup will not only harness hidden talents but also address youth restiveness and create economic opportunities,” the governor noted.
He added that the ongoing renovation of sports infrastructure at venues like Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, J.S. Tarka Stadium in Gboko, Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina-Ala, and facilities in Otukpo are designed to enhance the state’s economic prospects.
The governor praised local government chairmen for sponsoring the tournament and called on referees, youths, and other stakeholders to ensure its success.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Benue State Football Association, Barr. Paul Edeh, commended Alia for his commitment to sports development, which has led to the revival of the Governor’s Cup after a nine-year hiatus.
Edeh revealed that both the male and female categories of the tournament will receive N10 million each in prize money.
He also disclosed that eight teams from different centers would qualify for the Benue State Football League, scheduled to kick off next year.
To ensure fair play, Edeh noted that assessors have been deployed to monitor referees at all match centers, warning that erring officials would face penalties.
In her remarks,Mrs. Margaret Icheen, a BSFA Board member, described the Governor’s Cup as the state’s premier football competition. She called for cooperation among stakeholders to ensure its success.
Host chairman of Gboko Local Government Council, Barr. Atoze Yina, described the tournament’s revival as a new dawn for sports in Benue, noting that Gboko remains a hub for talent discovery. He assured participants and spectators of security throughout the tournament.
The opening match saw Ohimini Local Government Council defeat their Gwer West counterparts 2-1 in an exciting encounter.
