… Closure Causes Severe Delays As Travellers Are Left Stranded
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, December 05, (THEWILL) – The Nnamzi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has been closed to air traffic by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) following an incident involving a Saudi Air cargo aircraft with registration number K74798.
Aviation sources told THEWILL that the Boeing 747 aircraft which landed on runway 4 at about 9.20pm Wednesday night, damaged one of the wings after it rolled and clipped a facility at the maintenance area of the airport on Thursday. The wing was reportedly damaged.
There are however no casualties.
NAMA spokesman, Mr. Supo Atobatele told journalists that the airport will be reopened to flights as soon as officials remove the incapacitated plane from the scene of the incident.
NAMA said it will continue to update journalists and the public on developments.
The closure has however left travellers stranded following the inability of planes to take off or land at the airport.
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is the only airport in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
