October 15, (THEWILL) – On Saturday, Antoine Griezmann scored the game-winning goal in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao to reach his 100th La Liga goal for the club.
The France forward marked his first league appearance since Atletico confirmed on Monday that Griezmann’s loan return from Barcelona would be made permanent with a cool second-half finish.
In spite of Alvaro Morata being denied a goal by a VAR review earlier on, Griezmann’s effort was sufficient for Diego Simeone’s team, after another of their usually composed performance. A late penalty award in favour of Athletic was correctly revoked.
With the win, Atletico moved up to third place in La Liga, three points behind leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid, ahead of Sunday’s Clasico between the two age-old rivals.
Atletico now has three straight victories in La Liga, moving them ahead of Athletic into third place. Their following match is on Tuesday against Rayo Vallecano. Athletic, on the other hand, have broken their four-game winning streak and slipped to fourth place. They go to Getafe for their next game.
