October 25, (THEWILL) — Bruno Guimaraes struck deep into stoppage time to deliver Newcastle United a dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham at St. James’ Park on Saturday. The Brazilian midfielder converted a rebound after goalkeeper Bernd Leno had saved William Osula’s initial effort, capping a tense encounter between two sides separated by just one point before kick-off.
Newcastle dominated the opening period and went ahead through Jacob Murphy in the 18th minute. The winger robbed Calvin Bassey of possession before finishing clinically past Leno, though the hosts should have extended their advantage when Murphy was denied in a one-on-one situation just before the interval. Both Murphy and Nick Woltemade had earlier struck the woodwork.
Marco Silva introduced Kevin at half-time and Fulham found renewed vigour. The substitute’s cross led to Raul Jimenez striking the crossbar in the 56th minute, with Sasa Lukic reacting quickest to head in the equaliser from close range. The visitors suddenly looked capable of claiming a result.
Newcastle pressed for a winner and Guimaraes wasted a good headed chance. Another Bassey mistake proved costly when he surrendered possession to Osula, whose shot from the box edge was parried into the path of Guimaraes.
The result lifts Newcastle to 10th place with 12 points, whilst Fulham drop to 16th on eight points. Silva’s men now sit just three points above the relegation zone after failing to hold onto their equalizer.
