April 08, (THEWILL) – A final-year Economics student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Augustine Madubiya, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday by gunmen who invaded Istijaba Villa, an off-campus student lodge located in Unguwar Jaji, Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack, which occurred around 3:00 a.m., also claimed the life of a local resident, identified as a Fulani cattle rearer, who was reportedly tending to his livestock when the assailants opened fire.
Public Relations Officer of the University, Jamilu Muhammad, confirmed the abduction and killing, noting that another student, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, narrowly escaped being captured.
Following the incident, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, led a delegation of university officials to the scene in the company of the Divisional Police Officer for Kalgo and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Professor Umar assured the student community of the university’s unwavering commitment to their safety, disclosing that he had reported the development to the Kebbi State Government through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services.
He also commended the District Head of Unguwar Jaji and the local community for their swift response, while calling for heightened efforts by security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted student and prevent future incidents.
Spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that a manhunt has been launched to track down the kidnappers.
“Our officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo, are currently combing the surrounding forests in a bid to rescue the abducted student and apprehend the perpetrators,” Abubakar said.
The attack has heightened concerns about the safety of students residing in off-campus locations and renewed calls for strengthened security measures around educational institutions in the state.
