June 02, (THEWILL) – Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed a businessman and abducted his wife in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The incident occurred around 4pm on Sunday along Irette Road, Golden Estate, Abba Father Avenue, in the Umuguma area of Owerri West Local Government Area.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity told our correspondent that the couple were in their Highlander SUV alongside two land agents when they were attacked.
“They were going to inspect a piece of land they had allegedly purchased when masked men wielding guns emerged and attacked them. The man initially escaped while they held his wife.
“ He later returned to check on her, but the attackers turned on him. He was shot dead while they abducted his wife and fled into the forest,” the source said.
He added that the assailants abandoned the victim’s vehicle at the scene, while the two land agents managed to escape, though one reportedly sustained injuries.
Policemen later arrived and evacuated the businessman’s remains.
The identities of the couple were yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, saying operatives had launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the abducted woman.
“The Command is aware of this unfortunate incident and has commenced a vigorous operation to uncover the miscreants responsible and ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” Okoye
