April 26, (THEWILL) – No fewer than 21 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a deadly attack by gunmen on Gobirawa Chali, a gold-mining village in Dan Gulbi District of Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara State.
While full details of the incident remain sketchy, Amnesty International said the assailants, numbering in the hundreds, stormed the village on motorcycles around midday Thursday and launched a house-to-house attack.
A resident, Isah Ibrahim, who spoke with THEWILL, said the attackers first targeted a local mining site where they killed 14 persons before proceeding to homes and a mosque where more bodies were later recovered.
“So far, we have found 21 bodies,” Ibrahim said.
Amnesty International, in a statement, condemned the repeated attacks on the area.
“The people of Dan Gulbi district have been repeatedly attacked by gunmen and continue to live perpetually in fear of a potential attack,” the rights group stated.
Efforts to get a response from the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful as he did not immediately respond to calls and messages seeking comment.
