SAN FRANCISCO, December 09, (THEWILL) – No fewer than 77, 000 residents of Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State are now living as refugees outside their homeland.

The unfortunate Gwoza indigenes were forced to flee their homes as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Gwoza, a hilly town in southern Borno, was sacked and occupied by Boko Haram gunmen about four months ago.

Disclosing this in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, while presenting food items donated by the state government to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the Chairman of Board of Trustees of Gwoza Christian Communities, Mr. Williams Naga, said no fewer than 16,000 residents of Gwoza are now living in IDPs camps in Maiduguri

According to Naga, over 46,000 IDPs from Gwoza are currently taking refuge in nine different villages while 15,000 are staying in camps created by government outside Maiduguri, stressing that the 16,000 displaced persons from Gwoza in Maiduguri are currently taking refuge in seven camps in Maiduguri.

Naga said the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has given N10 million for the upkeep of the IDPs in Maiduguri and another N2 million to bring back those in Cameroon.

The distribution committee chairman, Adamu, in his remarks, said out of the N10 million , N6 million was spent on the procurement of food stuff for the IDPs.

He noted that aside the government ‘s assistance, the former religious affairs commissioner , Alhaji Mamman Durkwa, also donated 100 bags of rice and four cows to ameliorate the suffering of the IDPs.
