April 11, (THEWILL) — Bournemouth handed Arsenal a damaging 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, blowing the Premier League title race wide open with a controlled and deserved performance.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through the game’s first meaningful attack. Ryan Christie’s incisive pass sent Adrien Truffert clear down the left, and although his delivery struck William Saliba before crossing the line, Junior Kroupi was sharp enough to convert the loose ball. Arsenal levelled before half-time when Christie conceded a penalty for handball, Viktor Gyokeres stepping up to score from the spot in the 35th minute.
The Gunners failed to build on that foothold, however. Their only other genuine opportunity came in the 65th minute, when Gyokeres found himself one-on-one but was ruled offside before he could threaten the Bournemouth goal.
Alex Scott settled the contest nine minutes later. David Brooks played him in with a measured pass, and the England hopeful drove into the penalty area before finishing firmly into the roof of the net to give Bournemouth a lead they never relinquished.
Arsenal remain nine points ahead of Manchester City, who carry two games in hand and travel to Chelsea on Sunday. The two title contenders then meet directly next weekend, a fixture that now carries considerably greater weight following Arsenal’s failure to extend their advantage.
