October 18, (THEWILL) — Manchester City climbed to the top of the English Premier League table after Erling Haaland scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Etihad Stadium.
The result extended the hosts’ unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions and marked their 18th consecutive match without defeat against the Toffees.
Everton started brightly and ought to have taken the lead inside 15 minutes when Iliman Ndiaye’s square pass found Beto unmarked at the back post, but the striker failed to make proper contact with the goal gaping.
Haaland struck the bar with a header before half-time, whilst Jeremy Doku forced a save from Jordan Pickford, and Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Ndiaye at the other end to keep the match goalless at the interval.
The Norwegian striker broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, rising above his marker to head home from Nico O’Reilly’s cross.
Five minutes later, Haaland doubled the advantage with a fierce low strike from Savinho’s cutback that flew past Pickford, taking his tally to 23 goals in just 13 appearances for club and country this term.
The double marked Haaland’s sixth goal in five matches against Everton and effectively ended the visitors’ resistance.
David Moyes suffered defeat on his ninth consecutive visit to the Etihad, with Everton losing an away league match by multiple goals for the first time since December.
Pickford produced several late saves to deny Haaland a hat-trick, preventing a heavier defeat for the Toffees.
Everton have not won at the Etihad since 2010, and their winless run on this ground continues to haunt Moyes and his side.
