July 23, (THEWILL) – Brian Harman astonished the golf world with an outstanding performance on Sunday, clinching a remarkable victory at the 151st Open Championship, finishing 13-under par thanks to a historic putting display.
The 36-year-old held off a star-studded group of contenders, including Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim, and Jason Day, maintaining a comfortable three-shot lead throughout the final day. His exceptional putting skills shattered records, as he took only 106 putts to win the Open Championship, surpassing Todd Hamilton’s 2004 record of 109. Not a single putt within five feet was missed, and he converted 13 out of 14 putts within 10 feet, including a pivotal 40-foot putt on number 15 to secure the title.
Harman’s victory marked his third career win, the first since the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. Though he had only achieved two top-10 finishes in majors before, one of them came at last season’s 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews. While his Sunday lead initially seemed threatened after a bogey on the first hole and buried a second shot on number 3, Harman showed his resilience by executing a challenging chip-out from the rough and making an impressive par save.
He countered another bogey on the fifth hole with birdies on 6 and 7, re-establishing a comfortable advantage, which he held onto tenaciously despite, challenging rainy conditions. What set Harman apart during the tournament was his methodical approach to each hole. He excelled in strokes gained off the tee on number 11, consistently positioning himself on greens with precision. Although he may not have consistently placed his shots close to the pins, once on the green, Harman’s putting was virtually flawless.
