September 30, (THEWILL) — The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has mocked speculation of a possible presidential comeback by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2027, saying he would need “an extra dose of luck” to stand a chance.
The party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, in a statement on Tuesday, described suggestions of Jonathan’s return, reportedly pushed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Professor Jerry Gana, as “political wishful thinking.”
Oladejo argued that Nigeria’s evolving political realities demand competence, bold ideas, and proven leadership, not a nostalgic return to the past.
“Elections are not won on sentiments but on records and the ability to solve today’s challenges. Jonathan’s time has passed,” he declared.
He added that any re-entry into the contest would face legal, political, and historical obstacles that could erode the goodwill Jonathan earned by conceding defeat in 2015.
The Lagos APC reiterated its loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, crediting him with pushing economic reforms and infrastructure projects across the country.
It challenged the PDP to “focus on producing credible alternatives rather than clinging to yesterday’s memories.”
Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, has not confirmed any plan to recontest. But at a recent PDP gathering in Minna, Niger State, Gana described him as the party’s strongest bet to reclaim power, citing nostalgia for his tenure.
THEWILL also reported Jonathan’s recent meeting with David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fuelling fresh rumours of a possible comeback bid.
The APC, however, dismissed such claims as “desperate and unrealistic,” insisting Tinubu remains the man to beat in 2027.
