August 23, (THEWILL) — Residents of Amakohia-Ubi community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State say they now live in fear following a brutal attack by suspected herdsmen that left four people dead earlier this week.
Relatives of the victims have appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma and security agencies to intervene and protect the community.
A 45-year-old trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told THEWILL that the once-peaceful community has been left traumatised.
“Our village is scarred by the memories of that fateful day as we grapple with the loss of loved ones,” he said.
Another resident recounted how local vigilantes confronted the herdsmen near the community’s college but were met with gunfire.
She said one of the vigilantes, identified as Ojo-Ola, was killed, while another was injured. “They are still combing the bush for another missing vigilante,” she added.
The resident urged government authorities to act swiftly to “chase away the bandits and restore safety to our community.”
A commercial cyclist also lamented the situation, saying many villagers have deserted their homes. “We are no longer comfortable in our own land. Government, please intervene,” he pleaded.
