SAN FRANCISCO, November 20, (THEWILL) – Members of the House of Representatives Thursday set aside their bitter clash with security operatives at the National Assembly early Thursday to hold a special executive session, where they turned down President Goodluck Jonathan’s request to elongate the emergency rule declared in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, saying the strategy has not been effective against the Boko Haram.

Members of the House, who held the closed-door session after Senate President David Mark ordered the closure of the National Assembly until Tuesday, urged the President to invoke section 81 of the 1999 Constitution and deploy troops to conflict areas, instead of seeking an extension to the emergency rule.

Briefing National Assembly correspondents after the session, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, the spokesman of the House, said the House agreed that the state of emergency has not effectively dealt with the Boko Haram problem.

The Senate has also been unable to approve the President’s request after two days of deliberations.
