October 05, (THEWILL) — In what observers have described as a landmark move for grassroots governance, councillors of the Ikeduru Local Government Legislative Council visited the Imo State House of Assembly in Owerri on Tuesday, observing live plenary proceedings from the hallowed chambers.
The visit, considered both historic and symbolic, marks a significant step by local legislators to align themselves with higher parliamentary standards while reaffirming their commitment to democratic service.
Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Engr. Kingsley Asamonye Chibuzor, Councillor representing Ngugo/Ikembara Ward, said the experience was “transformative” and would leave a lasting impact on how councillors legislate going forward.
“This visitation was intentionally designed to expose us to the realities of lawmaking, debate, and representation in a professional environment. The lessons learned here will directly translate to improved service delivery at the grassroots”, he said.
According to him, the councillors gained deeper insight into parliamentary ethics, motions, debates, and resolutions, noting that the sessions helped them appreciate how laws are crafted to shape public policy.
He described the visit as a symbolic declaration of readiness by Ikeduru lawmakers to uphold democracy, strengthen representation, and respect the sanctity of legislative duties.
“We have reaffirmed our role as the first point of democratic representation. Governance begins at the grassroots, and what we contribute here directly affects governance at higher levels”, Asamonye added.
He stressed that the visit served as a bridge between community aspirations and state-level policymaking, revealing the interconnected nature of governance.
The councillor also emphasised that the shared exposure will foster unity and synergy among council members as they pursue meaningful motions and people-oriented resolutions.
