SAN FRANCISCO, December 04, (THEWILL) –Five leading state governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has been very critical of President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of the nation’s affairs, especially the management of the economy and the Boko Haram crisis in northern Nigeria.
The governors that met with Obasanjo behind closed-doors are Senator Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Dr. Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Mr. Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Babangida Muazu Aliyu (Niger) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi).
Addressing correspondents after the over 3-hour-long meeting this afternoon, Obasanjo said they deliberated on various issues affecting the nation, saying the economy has been pretty bad, and that government owes its citizens the plain truth.
He added that the problems could be corrected “If there is the will and courage to do the right thing at the right time.” Apparently referring to President Jonathan and the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, he challenged them to tell Nigerians the truth about the true state of the ailing economy and muster the will to find rescue the nation.
President Jonathan has been at the receiving end of bashings from Obasanjo since relations between them turned frosty over Jonathan’s decision to jettison Obasanjo’s counsel against seeking re-election in 2015.
