July 14, (THEWILL) — India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed deep sadness over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Modi, in a condolence message shared via his official X handle on Monday, described Buhari as a statesman, whose legacy of diplomacy and commitment to bilateral ties will be fondly remembered.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering commitment to India–Nigeria friendship stood out.
“I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Nigeria”, Modi wrote.
He recalled his personal interactions with Buhari, highlighting the late leader’s wisdom, warmth, and dedication to strengthening India–Nigeria relations.
Buhari, who passed away in London at 82 on Sunday, July 13, 2025, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later democratically elected as president between 2015 and 2023.
His remains will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura on Monday, according to Islamic rites.
