BEVERLY HILLS, SEPTEMBER 08, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shifted Saturday’s Edo State governorship elections a few hours after insisting it would go ahead with the poll despite an advise by the DSS and police that the poll be postponed over security issues.
INEC spokesman, Mr. Nick Dazang, who announced the development, said the rescheduled poll will hold in no later than two weeks. “A new date for the election will be announced latest Friday,” he said.
THEWILL gathered that the decision to shift the election was reached at a security meeting held in Benin, the Edo State capital this evening (Nigerian time). The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, and other officials of the commission will address the press on the development.
THEWILL recalls that INEC was advised by the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Police to shift the elections because security intelligence gathered showed that militants were planning to attack the state during the holiday.
