BEVERLY HILLS, September 07, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday resolved to proceed with the Edo State governorship election as scheduled.

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and the Department of State Services, DSS, had on Wednesday advised the national electoral body against going ahead with the election bill for Saturday, citing security concerns.

But the National Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed at a press briefing at the Edo state headquarters of the commission that the election will be held on September 10, 2016 as earlier planned.

Stakeholders both within and outside INEC have been meeting since Wednesday when the two security agencies called for the postponement. There had also been concerns that the date for the election is clashing with the date for General Certificate Examination of the West Africa Examination Council, WAEC.
