June 03, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan sealed their Serie A campaign with a 1-0 victory over Torino, setting the stage for their upcoming UEFA Champions League final clash with Manchester City.
Ahead of their journey to Istanbul on June 10, the Nerazzurri had league obligations to fulfil on Saturday. It was Marcelo Brozovic’s exceptional strike that made all the difference, while substitute goalkeeper, Alex Cordaz, delivered a superb save to protect Inter’s lead in the second half.
It took Romelu Lukaku to inject energy into an otherwise lacklustre game when he created space near Torino’s area and narrowly missed with a deflected low shot early on. Stefan de Vrij’s subsequent header from the resulting corner failed to trouble Torino’s goalkeeper, but the breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute.
Brozovic capitalised on the time and space he was afforded around 20 yards out, punishing Torino with a splendid left-footed strike that nestled in the bottom-right corner. Brozovic nearly had an assist but Roberto Gagliardini squandered the opportunity with a wayward header from close range. Former Inter forward, Yann Karomah, almost made an immediate impact from the bench, testing Samir Handanovic with a remarkable save.
Handanovic, who received a standing ovation upon his substitution for Cordaz in the 65th minute, watched as Cordaz promptly pulled off an equally stunning save to deny Antonio Sanabria’s effort and secure Inter’s victory. As they head to Turkey, Inter will aim to claim their first UCL title since 2010 against Pep Guardiola’s formidable Manchester City.
