November 21, (THEWILL) – Italy emerged victorious in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup, defeating Slovakia comprehensively in Malaga to claim their fifth tournament title.
World No. 4 Jasmine Paolini delivered a commanding performance, routing Rebecca Sramkova 6-2 6-1 in the decisive singles match.
The Italian team, led by captain Tathiana Garbin, established their supremacy early with Lucia Bronzetti’s impressive 6-2 6-4 win against Viktoria Hruncakova.
Bronzetti strategically neutralised her opponent’s strengths, forcing movement and precision throughout the encounter.
Paolini’s triumph marked an extraordinary year for the 28-year-old Italian, who previously finished as runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Her tactical approach overwhelmed Sramkova, breaking serve decisively and controlling the match with remarkable consistency.
Slovakia, who had previously won the competition in 2002, entered the final after remarkable victories against top international teams including the United States, Australia, and Great Britain.
However, they found the Italian team too formidable, ultimately falling short in their quest for another championship.
The victory represents a significant milestone for Italian tennis, returning them to world champion status for the first time since 2013.
Bronzetti captured the team’s sentiment, stating: “I am very proud to be here, to represent Italy and I am so happy for this win.”
