Ivory Coast Coasts To Comfortable Win Over Comoros In AFCON Qualifier

March 29, (THEWILL) – Ivory Coast secured a 2-0 win against Comoros in a Group H match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification.

The match took place at Stade Omnisports de Malouzini in Moroni on Tuesday night. The Elephants, who have already qualified for the tournament as hosts, claimed the top spot in the group standings, while the Coelacanths remained third on the table, trailing second-placed Zambia by six points with two games left to play.

Ibrahim Sangare, the PSV Eindhoven midfielder, scored the opening goal in the 36th minute to give Ivory Coast the lead. The home team tried to equalise, but Ivory Coast defended well and maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Franck Kessie added the second goal for Ivory Coast in the 58th minute, sealing a comfortable win over Comoros, who were outplayed by the two-time African champions.

The battle for the qualifying spot continues in June when Zambia hosts Ivory Coast, and Comoros will travel to Lesotho, who are yet to win a game in the group stage. The Elephants will aim to maintain their form and gain confidence before the tournament starts in January 2024.
