September 16, (THEWILL) – Alex Iwobi came on as a substitute in his return from injury to help Fulham secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Luton Town at Craven Cottage on Saturday, extending the visitors’ wait for a first English Premier League point this season.
A second half strike from substitute, Carlos Vinicius, was enough to give Fulham the three points, despite a determined defensive display from Luton. The home side dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down a deep-lying Luton backline. The visitors went close through Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris, while Jacob Brown hit the post with a header.
Luton almost took a surprise lead after the break when Amari’i Bell forced a good save from Fulham keeper Bernd Leno. With Fulham frustrating in attack, manager Marco Silva introduced Iwobi and Vinicius just after the hour mark. The Brazilian made an immediate impact, pouncing on a spill from Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski to tap home what proved to be the winner.
Luton never gave up and went close to an equaliser in stoppage time, but captain Tom Lockyer headed wide from close range. The win moves Fulham up to 9th in the Premier League table while Luton remain rooted to the bottom after four straight defeats.
Both sides return to action in the EPL on Saturday with Fulham away to Crystal Palace and Luton away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
