President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed Honourable Justice Mahmud Mohammed as the new Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN) and has forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation.
In a letter dated November 10, 2014, read at Wednesday’s plenary by Senate President, Senator David Mark, President Jonathan urged the Senate to confirm his appointment expeditiously as the outgoing incumbent Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Aloma Muktar, will be due for retirement on November 20, 2014, having attained the 70 years age limit.
“In conformity with section 231 sub section (1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which gives the President powers to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria, acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation of the appointment by the Senate, I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Mahmud Mohammed, CFR for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria,” Jonathan wrote.
