JUSTICE ZAINAB BULKACHUWA (L), WITH THE FORMER PRESIDENT, JUSTICE AYO SALAMI (R)
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, March 19, (THEWILL) – President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday urged the Senate to confirm the appointment of Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as President of the Court of Appeal.
President Jonathan had in 2012 approved the appointment of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as the new Acting President of the court after the expiration of the tenure and retirement of Justice Dalhatu Adamu.
Adamu was appointed Acting President of the Court of Appeal on August 22, 2011, following the crisis of confidence between then President, Justice Isa Ayo Salami, and then Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu which led to Salami’s suspension on August 18, 2011.
In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Jonathan said, “In conformity with section 238, sub- section ( 1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended which gives the President powers to appoint a president of the court of Appeal acting on the recommendations of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation by the Senate.
“I hereby present the nomination of Honourable Zainab Bulkachuwa as President of the Court of Appeal. It is my hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration and approval of the Distinguished Members of the Senate.”
In a related development, President Jonathan also wrote to the Senate President introducing for formal consideration and enactment into law by the Senate the National Fertilizer Bill 2014 and the Nigerian Metallurgical Industry Bill 2014.
