October 31, (THEWILL) – Crystal Palace eliminated Aston Villa from the EFL Cup with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park, despite suffering two significant first-half injuries to key players.
Eberechi Eze opened the scoring with a header before departing with a hamstring concern, while Adam Wharton exited due to groin discomfort. Jhon Duran equalised for Villa, but Daichi Kamada’s long-range strike into the bottom-left corner proved decisive for the visitors.
Villa manager Unai Emery defended his team selection, which featured only three regular starters Leon Bailey, John McGinn and Diego Carlos. “We started with 11 players, who are in the first team”, Emery said post match. “We competed and we lost, but we competed with the idea of players getting performances.”
Palace manager Oliver Glasner addressed the injury situations in his squad: “The problem [with Eze] was his hamstring and we do not know how serious it is.” Regarding Wharton, Glasner explained the midfielder had experienced ongoing groin issues for several months.
