September 21, (THEWILL) – This season, Harry Kane and the football captains of nine other nations will wear special armbands as part of a campaign against discrimination.
In order to participate in the OneLove initiative, England has teamed up with the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Wales. Three Lions’ players will also make time to meet migrant workers as part of the initiative when they land in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.
The Dutch were the ones who first came up with the idea, which intends to “use the power of football to promote inclusion and send a message against discrimination”. To commemorate the campaign, the captains of each nation’s national teams will don an eye-catching armband with a heart made of various colours.
Kane will wear the armband for the first time on Friday when England plays Italy in a UEFA Nations League match along with the black armband for Queen Elizabeth, which all English players will also wear.
The 29-year-old said: “As captains, we may all be competing against each other on the pitch, but we stand together against forms of discrimination.”
