June 9, (THEWILL)- The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has begun an investigation into the alleged scam that marred the recent empowerment of street hawkers by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The probe follows a viral video exposing officials who allegedly coerced beneficiaries into surrendering a significant portion of the N50,000 grants received.
According to sources, most original beneficiaries were denied access to the Coronation Hall where the event took place, with impostors taking their place.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had recently presented N50,000 each to 465 street hawkers to boost their capital.
In a 60-second video, a beneficiary, Nura Isa, confessed to being coerced by officials to return N45,000 from the N50,000 cash given to him.
Isa alleged that he was part of a batch of 100 beneficiaries cornered by officials, who demanded that they comply “in their own interest.”
The Commission’s Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and bring to justice those responsible, regardless of their position or influence within the government.
“The commission is investigating the matter and anyone found involved will be brought to justice.
“The agency is determined to prevent corruption from undermining the integrity of the empowerment initiative of the government and ensure that justice is served,” he said.
