October 25, (THEWILL) – The Kano State High Court has directed the State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to proceed with the conduct of local government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024.
Justice Sanusi Ma’aji gave the order on Friday while ruling in a suit filed by KANSIEC against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 13 others.
THEWILL reports that Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano had barred KANSIEC from conducting the council election on Tuesday, noting that the commission was illegally constituted. The court further restrained security agencies including the Police DSS and NSCDC from providing security for the poll.
Maintaining that any attempt to truncate the process of conducting the poll amounts to nullity, Justice Ma’aji, in a ruling on Friday, held that the provisions of the Constitution empower KANSIEC to conduct, supervise and hold local government elections across the 44 LGAs in the State.
As a matter of urgency, the court ordered security agencies to protect life and property during the election, scheduled for Saturday.
