April 19, (THEWILL) — Defending champions Bayern Munich retained the Bundesliga title with four games to spare, following a 4-2 victory over Stuttgart on Sunday.
The confirmation arrived courtesy of Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, leaving Vincent Kompany’s side 15 points clear of second-placed Dortmund with the gap now beyond reach.
Stuttgart threatened early and took the lead when Bilal El Khannouss set up Chris Fuhrich, who side-footed past Jonas Urbig in the 21st minute. Bayern levelled 10 minutes later through Raphael Guerreiro, who converted after Jamal Musiala glided past two defenders to set him up, and two minutes after that, Guerreiro released Luis Diaz to tee up Nicolas Jackson for a close-range finish. Jackson started in place of Harry Kane, with Kompany making wholesale changes to his lineup.
Alphonso Davies extended Bayern’s lead in the 37th minute, curling a left-footed effort off the outside of his boot after Diaz cut the ball back. Kane, introduced at the interval, added a fourth by turning in the rebound after Alexander Nubel pushed Leon Goretzka’s shot into his path, though the Stuttgart goalkeeper denied Goretzka again shortly after.
El Khannouss remained a counter-attacking threat throughout, keeping Urbig alert at the other end, before Atakan Karazor found Chema Andres for a volleyed consolation in the 88th minute. Stuttgart’s late reply did nothing to dampen the title celebrations in Munich.
