March 30, (THEWILL) – Barcelona restored their three-point advantage at the top of La Liga with a commanding 4-1 victory over local rivals Girona on Sunday.
The victory came after Real Madrid had pulled level at the summit following their 3-2 win against Leganes on Saturday, but Barcelona made their game in hand count.
The Blaugrana opened the scoring two minutes before half-time when a Lamine Yamal free-kick deflected off Girona defender Ladislav Krejci for an own goal.
Girona equalised after the restart through Arnaut Danjuma, who finished calmly after receiving a pass from Daley Blind.
Robert Lewandowski proved decisive for Barcelona, scoring twice to put the match beyond doubt.
His first came just after the hour mark with an acrobatic flick before he added his second – and 25th league goal of the season – in the 77th minute following excellent work from Frenkie de Jong.
Substitute Ferran Torres completed the scoring four minutes from time with a clinical finish after controlling a pass from Gerard Martin.
The result moves Barcelona to 66 points, three ahead of Real Madrid and nine clear of Atletico Madrid in third position.
For Girona, who remain in 13th place seven points above the relegation zone, this defeat contrasts sharply with their 4-2 victory in the corresponding fixture last season.
Barcelona will now look to maintain their momentum at the top of La Liga as the 2024/2025 season progresses toward its conclusion with marksman Lewandowski continuing his impressive goal-scoring form that has been instrumental to their campaign progress.
