August 16, (THEWILL) — La Liga president, Javier Tebas, has criticised Real Madrid’s opposition to Barcelona’s potential fixture against Villarreal in Miami, accusing the club of hypocrisy. Real Madrid released a statement condemning the proposal, arguing it breaches the league’s principle of “territorial reciprocity.” Tebas dismissed these claims, insisting the neutral venue would not distort competition. The fixture, still under discussion, would mark La Liga’s first official match outside Spain.
Tebas cited Real Madrid’s past conduct, including their recent registration of Franco Mastantuono under a reserve-team number despite his €45 million transfer fee. The 17-year-old, unveiled on August 14, is expected to feature for the senior squad under manager Xabi Alonso. “Top-flight teams have 25 players, yet Madrid registered him as a reserve,” Tebas told RNE. He referenced Vinícius Júnior’s similar registration in 2018, though the Brazilian actually played for the reserve side.
The league chief also pointed to Real Madrid’s stadium relocation during the COVID-19 pandemic as another example of rule flexibility. While other clubs adhered to restrictions, Madrid secured approval to continue construction on the Santiago Bernabéu. Tebas acknowledged the move did not disrupt the competition but questioned Madrid’s sudden emphasis on integrity. “If we’re discussing fairness, we must examine all instances,” he said.
Tensions between Tebas and Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, have intensified this year. In June, La Liga denied Madrid’s request for an extended preseason break after their Club World Cup semi-final run. The league argued the calendar could not accommodate further adjustments. Madrid’s leadership has frequently clashed with Tebas over financial regulations and broadcasting rights.
The Miami proposal, if approved, could generate significant commercial revenue for La Liga. Tebas emphasised the need for innovation amid growing competition from other leagues. However, domestic backlash and legal hurdles remain unresolved. The Spanish Football Federation has yet to sanction the match, and fan groups have threatened protests over the potential displacement of local supporters.
