May 15, (THEWILL) – La Liga has announced that an investigation would be launched into the chaotic scenes that unfolded during Barcelona’s long-awaited celebration of their 27th La Liga title.
The joyous atmosphere quickly turned into turmoil as a group of Espanyol fans, known as ultras, stormed the pitch with the intention of confronting the victorious Barcelona players celebrating their first league title since 2019. What initially started as jubilant dancing and celebration in the centre circle rapidly escalated into a perilous situation.
Riot police and stewards intervened to contain the enraged Espanyol mob, who resorted to wielding chairs and launching objects from the stands. The rioting persisted even after the Barcelona players and staff were safely escorted off the field, with fans directing their grievances towards the club’s board, expressing dissatisfaction with their current position in La Liga.
As tensions reached a boiling point, the tunnel became a hotspot for confrontation, where Espanyol ultras managed to accost several Barcelona players, including Ronald Araujo and Sergio Busquets. Heated exchanges and physical altercations ensued, but fortunately, Marcos Alonso, Ferran Torres, and other teammates swiftly stepped in to diffuse the situation and protect their aggrieved teammates.
Following the distressing incident, Espanyol’s CEO, Mao Ye, issued apologies to the footballing world, unequivocally condemning the actions of the ultras and asserting that such behaviour contradicts the club’s principles.
Ye vowed to implement measures to prevent future occurrences and acknowledged the need for introspection and improvement. La Liga has expressed its commitment to thoroughly review the available evidence and collaborate with Espanyol to ensure that those responsible for the pitch invasion are permanently banned from the stadium.
