
July 01, (THEWILL) – The inaugural edition of the Lagos City Cup kicked off to much excitement and fanfare in Lagos State, on Saturday.
The four-day event, supported by La Liga champions Barcelona and Atleti Sant Just FC, commenced at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan. A total of 16 clubs from Nigeria showcased their talent at the Johnson Arena, highlighting the best of Nigerian football.
On the opening day, eight matches were played, and a total of 19 goals were scored, resulting in an average of over 2.3 goals per game. Among the captivating encounters, the clash between Lekki United and Future Pro stole the show, leaving the spectators at the stadium in awe. Both clubs engaged in a thrilling six-goal encounter, which proved to be the most entertaining and productive game of the day.
Despite Future Pro initially taking a comfortable 2-0 lead, Lekki United showed tremendous resilience by pulling one back before halftime. Future Pro extended their lead to 3-1 in the second half with another well-taken goal. However, the youthful Lekki side dominated the latter part of the match, staging a sensational comeback with two superb goals. The game ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, allowing Lekki United to secure a share of the spoils.
As the tournament progresses, all the teams are set to continue the competition on matchday two, on Sunday, providing further excitement and opportunities for talented players to shine.
